Personally I don't agree with the act of Malay claiming some of our cultures as theirs. However, I don't agree if we use violence to counter them. Somehow, we have to thank to this conflict as they have awakened people of Indonesia in order to save our cultures. An important event that recently has built up nationalism of Indonesian people when Unesco has acknowledged batik as Indonesian's heritage. We could see so many people on their own consciousness wearing batik on 2 October'09. This kind of heroic act is the truly attitude as a respectable nation to protect our cultures.

This is my opinion about Malaysia attempts to claim Indonesian culture has reached new level. Now they try to claim Pendet dance (Tari Pendet) to be a part of Malaysian culture. Malaysia so far has claimed song, dance,food, and even island to be their property.
As much as I hate the pathetic attempt of a country claiming something that is not theirs and make it one of their own, I more hate Indonesians who mock Malaysians who are stealing their ancestor heritage. Anyway, it’s rather hypocrite for us is not it to be angry right now. "Have we ever see Pendet dance actually right now?","Do you always go to a museum or a traditional cultural event when you have a time ?".
Wouldn’t it be better if Malaysia off to claim Indonesian culture rather than us letting our own culture to go extinct? At least those culture will be preserved better. So I will support and agree if Malaysia claim our culture it's mean that there is a better chance for the culture to be known internationally.

Malay's probably unfair because the culture has stolen Indonesia, but Indonesia is also a mistake, why not patented rights of its own culture and recognize that this culture is ours and if it happens malay not dare cultural steal Indonesia in the same way and Indonesia is only interested in power and political and not too concerned with their own culture and at the moment of opportunity in malay to narrowness.

My opinion is different to many people, I think it can happen through no fault of malaysia .. Malaysia is only taking advantage of the Indonesian government that inventory, maintenance and preservation of culture is still very low .. so easy to claim the Indonesian culture malaysia ..
In my opinion, we do not need to blame malaysia .. we must see "intropeksi" in our own country, our government is doing the duties and obligations in protecting the Indonesian culture with as much as possible? whether the legislation protecting Indonesian culture? and whether the people we have included to protect and preserve our culture well?

Very necessary, especially in this era modernization. A lot of washed-away culture from the era passes. Especially for young people, the culture in Indonesia consider "ancient" because it does not fit with the times now.
Should, youth culture became heir to Indonesia, rather than leaving it for granted. Therefore, we as young people should be able to maintain, and preserve the culture in Indonesia to avoid claims by other countries.
A quite easy for young people to maintain the culture of Indonesia is to join the commune who concerned with culture of Indonesia like Indonesia Unite. Another way is using batik on a particular day. At least once a week. Only by using batik, those people know that young people care about the culture of Indonesia. So, we as young people are necessary to protect our culture, culture of Indonesia. :)

Early, our culture like reog ponorogo, batik, angklung, and many more is taken by Malaysia. if we don't do anything,our culture can be claimed.
Nowaday, the teenagers don't care about traditional culture. They are interested in modern culture. This fact is used by Malaysia to claim our culture.
To prevent that, We have to introduce our traditional culture to the teenagers. if we do that, they will love and support our culture. That is a one of manners to save our culture, but there are still many ways.

Actually, we not just need but we must to save. Because it is something that becomes our identity in the eyes of the international. Not just that our culture is our property. So if some still it from us we must fight to save it. Still I mean here is taken our patent rights.
For example Malaysia, they recognize our culture as their property. If some one still your identity and your property what u will do?
Surely you will take it back. But not by violent. But the diplomatic way and negotiate with them to determine the best solution.

Actually I don't like when I saw news on TV, Newspaper or Internet about Malay stole or claimed Indonesian cultures. I think they do that because they doesn’t had unique cultures as much as Indonesia to attract the tourism to visit their country. Malay claimed cultures that had potent to attract the tourism. Our culture indeed often has been stolen by Malaysia. And of course, I did not really agree by that. Therefore, to protect our culture, I’m going to publishing or spreading the culture personally. Why? Because according to me, by publishing that culture, then would even more people who knew that culture fully was belonging to INDONESIA. And with spreading that culture, perhaps some people will get interested in the culture. By seeing to that possibilities, definitely the culture will be increasingly famous and spread also. In my opinion, i don't agree with Malaysia claiming our cultures as theirs. However, i also don't agree on the Indonesian's reaction to solve the problem. Indonesia itself is a country filled with many different and beautiful cultures. But somehow, many people don't really take notice of the existence. For example, The Pendet dance. I'm sure you all have heard of it. But still, many Indonesian's know nothing about it. Like where it's from, and many also haven't seen it. The generations these days prefer the more modern dance, they take no interests in the traditional dancing because they think it's not "hip" and it doesn't fit in with the new cultures they know nowadays. And some consider it as old fashioned. The most recent debate that Indonesia and Malaysia had was about the claiming of Padang food as one of malaysia's foods. We all know Padang food and i'm sure some of us have had some. But a few people prefer eating fast foods or imported products. Some of them won't eat local Indonesian foods because some of them think eating fast foods in restaurant is more fashinable and high class than eating something out from the street. And lets not forget about the claiming of the Batik by the Malaysian's. Personally, i rarely see teenagers or anyone for that matter wearing Batik in public. Some people prefer buying the more expensive and imported designer clothing. And why is that? well, it's because some people only wan't to look fashionable in something that costs alot and is imported. They want to buy the local product because somehow it's not good enough for them. Yes it is wrong of Malaysia to claim our culture as theirs. But we're also wrong for not taking notice and care of our own culture. We are more interested in the modern culture and that's what makes our culture extinct and abandoned. We should treasure our culture and pass it on to the next generations. Let this conflict be a wake up call to all of us Indonesian's, so that we are aware of what is around us and not just get flown in by the modern world. We should be proud of our own culture and take advantage of it so that it will be know internationally. It isn't necessary to fight the Malaysian's. We should just show them that we are a strong Nation. Before we criticize other coutries for stealing and copying our culture, maybe we should look at our selves. I'm sure you have heard of "Indonesian Idol", "Are you smarter than a fifth grader", and "Who wants to be a millionaire". But did you know that we "stole" these programs from the American TV? hmmmm, and we criticized the Malaysian's for stealing our culture? well, my point is that before we judge and criticize others, we should look at our selves. Because we don't want to be labeled as hypocrites. So let's show more care to our culture. Because if it's not us, who else?

This is my second opinion for this issue.
I agreed with some comments from the others that we have made mistake by ignoring our cultures and let Malay who appreciates them claiming as theirs.
However, we can't just give up and let our heritages owned by others. It's quite normal that people make mistakes, but it's also a duty to correct them. Once we give up our cultures we will later on give up our other assets and finally we have no pride anymore as a respectable nation.
Due to the conflict with Malay, we can see that Indonesian people start to realize how important our cultures are. One of good example that recently our friends from Sevilla and Central International School succeeded to put a Muri record on 1607 pecanting batik and some schools including mine have been introducing traditional dancing as extracurricular. This is a very good action and has to be maintained. So I hope from this day, we can love and save another Indonesia's cultures.

We are surprise,that our neighbour country,malaysia claimed “Batik” as their own culture.Before,they also claimed that Angklung,Reog,Ponorogo and Wayang Kulit as their art and culture and the last thing they also said that pendet dance and some food such as “Rendang,Kare,and gado-gado” came from malaysia.

Malaysia should not need to claim our culture as their culture, because it can cause problems, disunity, debate and conflict. I think every country must have their respective cultures. Genesis is like as if Malaysia wants to have or feel entitled to have the culture we have. A lot of people from Indonesia was not concerned about this but they should realize that we like in our culture colonized by other countries. We certainly need to preserve or respect the cultures that we have a hereditary by our ancestors.
Maybe they think as a nation that has descended Malaya, they have the right to cultural descendants of Malaya. But I think they should not deserve to admit such Pendet, Angklung and culture to promote the brand because angklung Pendet mapun is our culture since the first of Indonesia before Malaysia felt deserved to have that culture.

My argument is agree, because with many imitate some of culture in Indonesian, can make Indonesian more preserve their culture. Until now, some of people in Indonesian never preserve or value their culture, because they are considere their culture is very ancient and already to old. For example pendet dance,reog ponorogo and many more. Now, we see very seldom traditional dance appear in a special day. That is already became a proof Indonesian can't keep their culture. In my opinion I don't agree with Malay claiming. Malay use many Indonesia our cultures, for example, Malaysia claiming Pendet (traditional dance from Bali), Reog Ponorogo, Rendang, Batik and another. However, we are not provided with much detail of who specifically is claiming one of Indonesian heritage as one of theirs or their specific comment that stated that they are claiming Tari Pendet to be one of theirs.Tari Pendet is a intangible product where there is no individual can claim that it is his right. The only thing that Indonesia can do is only register its culture, but to make a patent out of it is out of the question. So guys, be careful with ‘them’. They are the real enemy. My opinion : I think Malaysia action was really stupid, they think they can steal something that doesn’t belong to them very easily, without knowing the consecuense…
Because of their act, they have made people think something horrible.. as an indonesian, I just want a peacefull life with other country… but they(malaysia) didn’t gave any option other than war and peacefull negotiation… it’s their choice.. they know our military force are stronger than their… so, in the end they have to think about their own safety..

The act of Malaysia who has been claiming Indonesia’s property is totally wrong. However, we must think back what made them do that, or at least have the chance to do so.
I talked with many Indonesian people who are, and had been living in Malaysia for several years or more. They are working there as a clerk, construction worker, teacher, lecturers and maids. They admit that there are a lot of Indonesian people who stay, work, and even get married with local people. So many Indonesian people –from Java, Western Sumatra, and Madura especially, stay there and they still practicing the culture of their own including other Indonesian cultures. They speak their language; sing their own songs, etc. Are we going to forbid those Indonesian people to do their own culture just because they are in Malaysia?
Do you still remember about Majapahit Kingdom in Eastern Java? Don’t you know that their area conquering big area of Malaysia? The long term possession left its own history of culture, and customs. I personally think this could also be one of the reasons why both countries’ culture get mixed –and now, even become a big problem.
For me, what is behind it is just simply the ego of the people of Indonesia –whom are easily got provoked, also. Instead of finding the way out, they make this problem even bigger for themselves, and their own country.
This problem would never end if both of the countries just ignore it. I think this is not anymore about which country is right or wrong. Both of them are wrong if they keep letting the problem on and on like this. I really wish that one day that the head of the country and or the person in charge for cultural issue will sit together in a same place, time and discuss about this until a conclusion and solution found.
